What is The Role of Addition And Subtraction in Grade2 Math?

Grade2 mathematics focuses on four main aspects – it aims to increase the understanding of the base ten notation system among students, make them fluent in addition and subtraction operations, train them to use standard units to express quantities and teach them to describe and analyze shapes. It is more important than ever to inculcate in students the stamina of basic Math Practice, because the aims described above all require students to be familiar with the elementary math operations.

Take the example of the base ten notation system – this is just a fancy name for the usual Decimal system we use in our daily lives, the one which has digits from zero to nine. For students to be able to understand the place value of the numbers written in this system, they should be able to add in powers of ten e.g. 1145 means the sum of 5 units, 4 tens, 1 hundreds and 1 thousands. Without a grasp on Addition, Grade2 students will not be able to easily split the numbers into their respective place values in the decimal system. And in order two compare between the places values of the respective digits of two numbers, students need to be well versed in Subtraction. This is just one example of how important it is to practice math thoroughly in this grade. Another such example is that of the analyses and description of basic shapes. This means that students need to understand what the area and perimeter of a 2d shape e.g. square, circle, rectangle etc. are. Of course, exact formulas are beyond the scope of this grade, but by adding together basic squares of a given length, students can be given a rough idea of what the perimeter and area of a shape is and how it can be measured and expressed in standard units.

Even measuring and expressing lengths on a scale requires the pupils to be reasonably skilled at addition and subtraction. The thing to understand is that these two operations are fundamental to all disciplines of mathematics. Even multiplication and division, the other two basic arithmetic operations are iterations of these two operations. So until Grade2 students have had adequate math practice of these two operations, there is no chance for them to Learn the course of this grade. Teachers should develop the spirit of perseverance in their pupils, they should not be afraid to tackle problems that involve a lot of arithmetic operations – this is achievable only when they are given constant exercises that develop their stamina at attempting mathematical problems. This trait will not just be helpful to them in their primary school life; they will learn of its worth when they study complex mathematical complex in higher classes and have to solve highly challenging questions – only through the ability to focus and keep trying will they be able to succeed in solving them. This is the reason why this grade is so crucial in setting the base of students in this subject, and also why adding and subtracting numbers play an important role in this grade.
